After 21 years, the coveted Miss Universe crown has been brought back to India by Chandigarh's Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu, a 21-year-old model and actress. On December 12, with the whole world watching, Harnaaz Sandhu became the third Indian woman to win this prestigious title. And what a proud moment it was for Indians in and outside the country. However, before Harnaaz, it was Lara Dutta who won the title back in 2000, at a time when India was having a dream run at beauty pageants, having also won Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific International titles. An Sushmita Sen was crowned the first Miss Universe in 19994. So, let's rewind, and take a walk down memory lane to revisit the crowning moments of our beauties, Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta as we celebrate Harnaaz's win. Sushmita Sen was the first Indian to win the Miss Universe title back in the year 1994! Even though Sushmita was all of 19, she was way ahead of her times - very thoughtful, mature and graceful! After impressing the judges in the preliminary interview rounds, in the finale, she was asked, 'What for you is the essence of being a woman?' Her well-thought-out response secured her the title and a place in our hearts. She said and I quote, 'Just being a woman is a gift of God that all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, who is a woman. She shows a man what caring, sharing and loving is all about. That’s the essence of being a woman.' The Miss Universe crown came back to India for the second time, 6 years later when Lara Dutta, the 22-year-old daughter of a retired wing commander won the title for the country. Much, like Sushmita, Lara Dutta, too, impressed the jury and everyone else with her beauty, intelligence and finesse!
